BlueParrott Inaugural Survey Reveals Top Driving Distractions

VXi BlueParrott launches new "Peek Into the Cab" research, continues talent search and showcases driver-favorite BlueParrott headsets at MATS 2017.

Dover, NH — March 23, 2017

BlueParrott® (a brand of VXi Corporation), a leading provider of Bluetooth® headsets for high-noise environments and the #1 headset manufacturer for the professional trucker market, today announced results of its first-ever BlueParrott Driver's Club "Peek Into the Cab" Survey.

The research, conducted by VXi BlueParrott in March 2017 and launched at MATS 2017, centers on preferences and behaviors as reported by approximately 1,900 drivers in the heavy-duty trucking industry. This year's results found that distractions still abound.

According to the survey, making or receiving phone calls and eating or drinking are the biggest driving distractions (44% and 45%, respectively). In addition, 43% of respondents reported that adjusting their radio, CD player or MP3 player takes their focus off the road, and 38% say texting while driving is a major distraction, despite laws in several states banning the practice.

"We appreciate the candor of our Driver's Club members in this 'Peek Into the Cab' Survey," said Urban Gillis, vice-president of VXi. "Distractions remain a huge issue for all drivers, but it is particularly concerning that texting, adjusting radios and making phone calls while operating vehicles is still so prevalent in this safety-conscious industry. These insights are valuable as we continue our commitment to offer innovative headset solutions that give heavy-duty truck drivers the freedom to use the latest mobile features without interfering with their operations."

Other highlights from the survey, include:

  • More than half (56%) stream music or video while on the road (driving or resting).
  • Nearly two-thirds use a headset only while driving or mostly while driving.
  • Most useful new features include extended battery life (51%), wireless charging (43%), and voice control capabilities (41%).

In addition to releasing this data at MATS 2017, VXi BlueParrott will continue to promote its recently launched Blue Believer contest, a talent search to find the new face of BlueParrott. The contest will run March 15 through April 15 with the winner set to be unveiled in Spring 2017. All US drivers who hold a Class A, B or C commercial driver's license are eligible to participate. Winners will receive an Ultimate BlueParrott Prize pack, featuring a suite of the latest BlueParrott products valued at more than $600. They will also receive limited-edition BlueParrott apparel and merchandise, travel center gift cards and will be offered a feature role in an upcoming BlueParrott campaign.
